Welcome to Richmond Hill, Georgia!
Richmond Hill, formerly called Ways Station, was incorporated
in 1962. It has existed as a rural community since the early 1700s
and is extremely rich in past history.
It is also known as
the city that Henry Ford built and was the scene of great social
and economic revolution under the guidance of the famous automobile
manufacturer. In 1935 Mr. & Mrs. Ford decided to build their
new winter home on the old Richmond Plantation site on a bluff overlooking
the Great Ogeechee River. To protect his view of the Great Ogeechee
and the marsh across from it, Mr. Ford purchased 4,023 acres in
Chatham County which was the old Vallambrosia Plantation. Beginning
in 1936, Mr. Ford built 292 buildings on his property many of which
were commercial or community type buildings. In order to show their
gratitude for what Mr. Ford had done for the community, locals organized
a campaign to have the name "Ways Station" changed to "Richmond
Hill", Richmond being the name of the Plantation upon which
the Ford Plantation was built.
In 1962, Richmond Hill was
incorporated as a project of the Richmond Hill Jaycees with the
approval of its citizens by a referendum vote. Since that time many
improvements have been made to the city, and continue to be made
to this day. With the opening of the new City Hall in December 1998
and a new Police Station in September 1999 a real "Civic Center"
is taking form. Additionally, the J.F. Gregory City Park opened
at the same time as the first annual "Great Ogeechee Seafood
Festival" in October 1999. The City of Richmond Hill will continue
to grow but will also continue to maintain its sense of community
spirit.
The real estate market in Richmond Hill is booming!
Because of its location and its natural beauty with its salt marshes,
navigable rivers, forests and open cropland create a beautiful background
for residential communities. |
